Tree of Knowledge

God tells us the end from the beginning, He is the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. In His Word, there are many jewels of wisdom and knowledge to be learned and understood. One of these jewels of knowledge is to understand the Tree of Life. This Tree Of Life carries significance in the Word, in that we hear about it in the beginning, and the end of the bible. In the beginning, God created the garden of Eden where Adam dwelt- a paradise of God. This garden had many trees that were beautiful, and it had two very special trees- the Tree Of Life, and the Tree of Knowledge of Good & Evil.

“And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. ~ Genesis 2:9

When God placed Adam in the garden, he gave one rule for Adam to live by:

”And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” ~ Genesis 2:16-17

So Adam and Eve (together known as “Adam”), dwelt in the garden of paradise. They had no sin and ate freely of the Tree Of Life, and all of the other trees in the garden with the exception of the Tree of Knowledge. Because they had no sin, they were both naked before God and were not ashamed:

“And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. ~ Genesis 2:25

Garden of Eden-New1

So Adam and Eve continued in obedience to God, until one day when the serpent came to tempt Eve. Remember that God warned them that if they eat of the Tree of Knowledge, they would surely die. Adam and Eve were originally created to live forever, eating of the Tree of Life. The serpent came and deceived them with lies:

“And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” ~ Genesis 3:4-5

So Eve was deceived and ate of the Tree of Knowledge. Adam followed suit. Immediately the condition of Adam and Eve changed from being “right with God,” to being in “sin- disobedience to God.” Their eyes were opened and they realized that they were naked before God (because of sin). Then came the moment of judgment, where God cast them out of the garden, and pronounced ‘punishments’:

“And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” ~ Genesis 3:14-19

Notice here, the punishments: 1. Women would now have pain/sorrow in bringing forth children, and 2. They would now have to eat of things that come out of the ground, herbs, etc, and they would have to labor to make this food, and even though they would eat this food, they were going to die and return to the dust of the earth. This was a big change from their life before. In the garden, they kept the garden and ate of it’s fruit along with the fruit of the tree of life- where they would live forever with God. Their food sustained them eternally. They had no pain or sorrow, and they lived in paradise. After the garden, they would eat of food of the ground that they labored for, only to have to experience death eventually and return to the dust of the earth. God drove them out of the garden to restrict them from eating of the Tree Of Life, and partaking in eternal life. Their sentence was death:

“So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.” ~ Genesis 3:24

You see, man was not created to die. We were created to live eternally! It is because of sin that death came into the world. It is because of sin that we have been separated from our Creator. It is because of sin, that men have been restricted from the Tree of Life/eternal life. God was never the problem- SIN IS THE PROBLEM! Today in the vanity and arrogance of man, many look at their feasts that they make, their fine meats and drinks, breads and recipes, and they think- this is wonderful! They truly believe- especially during holiday times that they are eating like Kings. Little does fallen man know, this food only leads to death. This earthly food is nothing, it turns to dust just as our flesh will one day. Not only that, but our having to eat of this food of the earth is a part of the curse placed upon Adam and Eve. They chose to eat of food that leads to death, and we being born of the seed of Adam originally, fall under this same curse. Then enters our savior Jesus, whose words are a mystery to many, but not to those that have sight. Jesus speaks of this food once again, the food of eternal life:

“Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. ~ John 6:32-35

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” ~ John 14:6

Here Jesus confesses- He is the bread of life- He is the food that can sustain us in eternal life. In other words- HE IS THE TREE OF LIFE that Adam and Eve once were permitted to eat of. Jesus was the Word of God in the flesh. Jesus further explains this mystery, when he established the eating of His flesh and blood:

“This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.” ~ John 6:50-59

If we are to have eternal life again, as in the original creation, we must partake of the Tree of Life- Jesus! Jesus was the Word of God made flesh to dwell among us. The Tree Of Life, is the WORD OF GOD, Jesus, the Way! He that eats of this bread of life, will have eternal life! Whether we live or we die comes down to the food that we are eating. When we walk in the flesh, we only see the food of the flesh. When we walk in the Spirit, we see and partake of the food of the Spirit- food that gives eternal life. The Word of God, Jesus, is our food. Again, Jesus explains that the Word of God is life:

“And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” ~ Matthew 4:3-4

The promise of eternal life, is a promise to once again be able to eat of the Tree Of Life in the midst of the paradise of God! This is Jesus, The Word of God made flesh! To overcome, we must become reborn– freed from sin and bondage. We are all waiting for the promises of the very last book and chapter of the Bible, which again circles back to the Tree Of Life in the paradise of God! We encourage you to come to Jesus today, to partake in LIFE, and to receive the promise of being raised on the last day! It all comes back to the Tree Of Life:

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. ~ Revelation 2:7

Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” ~ Revelation 22:14
